Glam-prog? Proggy glam-metal? Whaaaat?
Once, before the haircuts and trilbys and plaid shirts took back over, we were going to have THE FUTURE. Well, ladies, gentlemen, and the securely androgynous, once again, the future is now.
What I'm looking to do, apparently unlike anyone else on either side of the issue, is not to destroy, but *redeem* the Sunset Strip Spandex-rock sound and approach (and, yes, that includes the look and something of the attitude) with a shot of progressive rock and a shot of sophisticated pop, in a way that can sit well in an age of loops and grooves and iPads. Reference points from the past include might Van Halen and other LA hair bands, Jellyfish, Gentle Giant, Led Zeppelin, Rush, and Yes, but more in the sense that these things go into a sort of compost heap that helps new things grow. Vocals will help--I'm looking to have a lot of singing. Just be able to play the occasional odd meter and throw in some tricky bits--and, contrary to all conventional wisdom, don't be afraid to overplay a bit.
This is NOT gonna be a joke band; I like Steel Panther, but I think it's a shame that the best band of the resurgence of this sort of thing is essentially a joke band. That needs to change. I have some interest already, but not enough for a full band; a drummer can make something happen. If you're interested, drop me a line at email@example.com.
